Our CEO Paul Gordon speaks with Kylee Stone from the Uncharted Leader podcast, in a 5-part series taking listeners through hard decisions made easy, in a step-by-step guide to strategic decision-making.
Episode four focuses on the Decision Thinking principle: Active stakeholder participation
In previous episodes, Paul and Kylee looked at the importance of having a solid process as a foundation to better decision making and addressed the need for academic rigour. But even with those things in place, leaders will all have experiences of seemingly great decisions falling flat or not being supported by the people that they impact.
In this episode, Paul discusses the traditional approach to stakeholder engagement and how many leaders ‘consult’ or ‘brief’ their stakeholders about a decision, but still fail to achieve a decision that sticks or one that is implemented effectively. He asserts the key reason for this is that stakeholders haven’t been able to actively contribute to the decision-making process.
Paul and Kylee discuss ways to identify your key stakeholders, how they impact your decision and the ways that they can participate. Ultimately, active participation from a diverse range of stakeholders will overcome cognitive bias and create the foundation for decisions that stick.
Have a listen to the full podcast as Paul demonstrates how active stakeholder engagement can create greater ownership of the decision and commitment to implementation.
