Much of his work is with groups involving multiple stakeholders with differing views on complicated issues. His extensive industry experience includes financial services, healthcare, Internet technology and international trade as well as a diverse range of other sectors including professional services, education, mining and utilities. In addition to his regular work in Australia, Asia, the USA, the UK and Europe, he has been closely involved with programs in developing countries such as PNG and East Timor.
Patrick is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales and Fellow at the Australian Graduate School of Management. He has taught at University level in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and currently teaches Strategy and Managerial Decision Making on the MBA programs at the AGSM. He also designs and manages Executive Education programs for the AGSM in his capacity as Program Director. Patrick holds a Master of Science in Decision Sciences from the London School of Economics, Master of Education in Mathematics Education from QUT, a Graduate Diploma of Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts.
Grant is a renown expert and published authority on project risk management, project management capability maturity assessments (using P3M3) and Independent Quality Assurance (IQA) reviews of projects, programmes, and portfolios.
In 2017 Grant was named Risk Management Professional of the Year (RiskNZ). RiskNZ wrote about Grant’s award: “(Grant is) an acknowledged authority and thought leader on project-portfolio management practice and the reduction of risk in high risk projects. He is also a significant contributor to the risk management body of knowledge through publication and participation in industry events.” In 2011 Grant was lead author of the KPMG report for NZ Treasury “Portfolio, Programme and Project Management (P3M) Capabilities in Government – Increasing Success Rates and Reducing Costs“.
Grant is also the author of an award-winning and academically-acclaimed book on the problems of risk homeostasis in complex projects “Project Management, Denial, and the Death Zone“. J.Ross Publishing Inc, 2016.
Grant has an MBA with Distinction from Victoria University in Wellington, has been a PMI Project Management Professional for the last 18 years, and is certified in P3M3, MSP, MB, BBC, ILM and Gateway. Grant is also a member of PMI and a Charter Member of the Project Quality Assurance Forum (PQAF) and a member of RiskNZ.
